1992 5 Yuan Silver Proof Coin - Cai Wenji

This beautifully designed 5 Yuan coin was issued by the government of the People's Republic of China.

This coin commemorates the daughter of Cai Yong who lived during the second century AD.  Cai Wenji was brought up as a scholar and a musician.  During the Han era she was captured by Hu troops and held as a concubine for twelve years.  She bore a Xiongnu prince two sons and returned to her homeland in exchange for precious gifts.  There she married an officer named Dongsi.  After her father's death, Cai Wenji recorded his history from memory.  Haunted by thoughts of her long lost sons, she found solace in her poetry that still exists today.
