1995 5 Yuan Silver Proof Coin - Hangzhou Pagoda

This beautifully designed 5 Yuan coin was issued by the government of the People's Republic of China.

This Chinese silver proof coin features the great Pagoda of Hangzhou.  As capital of China's smallest province of Zhejiang, Hangzhou became important in the 12-13th centuries when it was the centre of the Sung dynasty.  This was a period of stable government and the development of technical and asrtistic skills such as shipbuilding, firearms, the compass, painting, poetry and ceramics.  Hangzhou is a port and the world's longest canal runs from is some 1,600km northwards to Tianjin.  There are fine landscaped gardens where the famous Pagoda dominates the scene.
