1984 5 Yuan Silver Proof Coin - Soldier Standing

This beautifully designed 5 Yuan coin was issued by the government of the People's Republic of China.

This silver coin depicts a standing soldier statue with members of the terracotta army behind.  The army was discovered in the 1970s and is one of the greatest archaeological finds that China has ever seen.  Some 6000 life size warriors standing in near formation were found in a pit in Shensi province.  Made of terracotta, the figures date from the Qin dynasty founded by Qin Shi Huang in 221 BC.  He banned the practice of burying slaves alive when their masters died, and the creation of figurines as funerary objects took over.  The terracotta army is now part of a museum which is a popular tourist attraction.
