A brilliantly innovative commemorative coin issued by The Perth Mint Released in 2005, the 60th Anniversary of the End of World War II 1oz silver proof coin incorporates a remarkable moving image depicting Australia's famous 'dancing man'. When viewed from different angles, a sequence of more than 20 original newsreel frames shows him pirouette through 360 degrees while tipping his hat during street celebrations in Sydney on 15 August 1945.

This particular coinhas won two categories in the Coin of the Year Awards, sponsored by Krause Publications’ World Coin News.   Following a ballot by an international panel of judges, the Australian legal tender coin emerged with the most votes in categories entitled Best Contemporary Event Coin and the Most Innovative Coinage Concept.

The innovative Perth Mint coin successfully conveys the euphoria Australians felt at the cessation of hostilities in 1945. Ecstatic people took to the streets where they danced, sang, kissed and held hands under a storm of confetti and streamers, including the 'dancing man' who was immortalised on film.

With a declared mintage of 20,559, individual 60th Anniversary of the End of World War II coins are no longer available from The Perth Mint.
