The £1 coin for 2006 is designed by Edwina Ellis and features Sir John Macneill's Egyptian Arch Railway Bridge.

The Egyptian Arch Railway Bridge was built in 1851 for the Dublin and Belfast Junction Railway Company.  It is situated about half a mile south of the Craigmore viaduct and crosses the Newry-Camlough road.  Designed by Sir John Macneil, the curving stonework and monumental presence of the bridge reflect the growing popularity of the Egyptian style in public architecture in Victorian times and make it a distinctive local landmark.
