A CELEBRATION OF HER LIFE - THE QUEEN MOTHER  1900-2002

This fine silver $5 coin has been produced to celebrate the life of Her Majesty The Queen Mother who passed away on 30th March 2002.  Born Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon on 4th August 1900, she was the ninth of ten children.  Her long and well-lived life spanned the entire twentieth century and Australia’s modern era as a Federation.  Her title of Queen came about on the coronation of her husband as King George VI on 12th May 1937.  The title of Queen Mother was bestowed on her following the death of the King and the accession of her daughter, the young Princess Elizabeth, to the throne on 6th February 1952.

The Royal Australian Mint has issued this coin as a tribute to and celebration of the life of the Queen Mother.  The beauty of the design of this one ounce pure Silver $5 Proof coin which was created by Stuart Devlin, is complemented by carefully chosen images and colours for the presentation case and outer packaging.  The image on the coin was taken from a photograph of the Duchess of York when she first visited Australia in 1927.  It shows the Duchess watching the Adelaide Cup being run at the Morphettville Racecourse in South Australia in May of that year.

The coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Australian Mint-branded white case and protected by a beauty box.
