2000 $5 SILVER PROOF - THE SYDNEY 2000 OLYMPIC COIN COLLECTION

HARBOUR OF LIFE - LAND

The Sydney 2000 Olympic Coin Program is a joint venture between the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint to commemorate the Olympic Games in Sydney in the Year 2000.  The sixteen coins in the Silver Coin Series feature two distinct themes: Australia’s cultural diversity and the environmental richness of the Australian Continent.

Each Silver coin carries the Sydney 2000 signature with rings in colour and is edge-lettered with the words ‘Games of XXVII Olympiad’.

The Sydney Opera House is an instantly recognisable Australian icon.  It was designed by renowned Danish architect Jorn Utzon and was officially opening by Queen Elizabeth II in 1973.  The Sydney Opera House is situated on Bennelong Point and reaches out into Sydney Harbour.

The central image is surrounded by a border of historic and modern Sydney city buildings including the AMP Tower, the Sydney Observatory, the Chinese Garden Pagoda, Hornby Lighthouse and the Sydney Convention Centre.  The reverse of the coin was designed by Stuart Devlin.  ‘Harbour of Life’ is the theme of the fourth festival in the Sydney 2000 Cultural Olympiad.

The coin is encapsulated and a rich green colour has been chosen for the interior and the exterior of the presentation case.

The coin is accompanied by a descriptive booklet that includes a Certificate of Authenticity and is protected by a beauty box.
