1997 SPIRT AND FAITH YORK MINSTER BIRTH OF CHRIST COIN FIRST DAY COVER

THE NEW MILLENNIUM - 2000 - YORK MINSTER

York Minster is the largest and most beautiful Medieval cathedral in England, and the last to have been completed before the Reformation.  This fantastic building stands today as a testament to the style and craftsmanship of the Middle Ages, from the thirteenth century transepts to the fifteenth century central tower.  The Minster which stands today took 250 years to complete and was started in the early thirteenth century by Archbishop Walter De Gray, whose tomb now stands in the eastern aisle of the south transept.

The coin is dated 1997 and depicts the birth of Christ.  The design of this coin is based upon the "Chellini Madonna" Plate sculpted by Donatello, the famous Florentine artist and sculptor of the Renaissance, around 1450 AD.  The scene shows the Virgin holding the child Jesus flanked by four angels, two angels on either side; all six figures are shown behind a railing and all six figures are haloed.

The Royal Mail Spirit and Faith stamps were issued on 7th November 2000 by Royal Mail and feature the following stamp designs - 2nd St Edmundsbury Cathedral; 1st Church Floodlighting; 2nd St Patrick Centre/Downpatrick and 1st Mystery Plays/York Minster.

The York Minster First Day Cover with the York, Mary and Child special handstamp postmark has been produced by Benham and features these stamps, which makes a very collectable and beautiful gift.

As we have several of the covers in stock, the serial number may vary from the item shown.
