Chief Albert John Luthuli was the leader of millions of black Africans in their non-violent campaign for civil rights in South Africa.  He was a man of noble bearing, charitable, intolerant of hatred and adamant in his demands for equality and peace amongst all men.  

On 11th December 1961 Chief Albert John Luthuli was awarded the 1960 Nobel Peace Prize in Norway.  He died on 21st July 1967 at the age of 69.

The reverse of the coin features Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Albert John Luthuli.  The obverse of coin features A "King Protea" flower, together with the date “2005” and the words “South Africa”.
