D-DAY 6TH JUNE 1944 - SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY

The Normandy invasion, codenamed “Overlord”, began on the 6th June 1944.  After a month-long air offensive and an Allied plan of deception which fooled Hitler into believing that the main attack would come in Pas de Calais, where he held back a powerful armoured division, the largest amphibious landing in history got underway.

In the early hours of 6th June, Allied airborne troops landed to seize control of strategic bridges and coastal defences on the flanks of the invasion zone.  The first Allied troops came ashore at 6.30pm.  By midnight on 6th June, 57,000 US and 75,000 British and Canadian troops had landed in Normandy.  By 25th August 1944 Paris had been liberated by these brave Allied soldiers.

The obverse depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing to right, date and origin.

The reverse depicts a D-Day landing scene and the inscription COMMEMORATING THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE D-DAY LANDING and SWORD GOLD JUNO OMAHA UTAH, plus the value.

This striking Silver Clad D-Day Memorial coin has a proof quality strike and reflective mirrored fields.  The $1 coin is beautifully presented in unique packaging from the London Mint and includes an actual small capsule of sand from Omaha Beach.
