The eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month

Each year people wear poppies, a universal symbol of remembrance, to show their appreciation for those made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, and those who still risk their lives to protect our freedom today. The poppy features on 2016 Remembrance Day coin, its vivid red petals a moving reminder of the blood shed by so many.

The inscription chose for this year's coin, 'Their name liveth for evermore' is widely used on war memorials around the world and comes from the Apocryphal Book of Ecclesiasticus 44:14: "Their bodies are buried in peace; but their name liveth for evermore."

The reverse design for the 2016 Remembrance Day coin was created by Royal Mint coin designer Thomas Docherty. He chose the poppy wreath as it seemed the most symbolic way that nations remember and commemorate the fallen. His design features the wreath that lies at The Royal Mint's war memorial at its home in Llantrisant, South Wales.
